How to Use Your Phone as a Microphone in OBS Studio with WO Mic

Modern smartphone MEMS microphones capture clean 48 kHz voice audio that rivals entry-level USB desk mics. With WO Mic and a properly configured OBS Studio filter chain, you can stream on Twitch or record YouTube commentary from your phone without buying dedicated audio hardware.

1. Match Sample Rates Between WO Mic and OBS (48 kHz)

Sample-rate mismatch is the number one cause of crackling audio in OBS. The WO Mic virtual driver outputs 48 kHz 16-bit mono PCM over USB and Wi-Fi. Match OBS to that rate:

  1. In OBS Studio open File → Settings → Audio.
  2. Set Sample Rate to 48 kHz.
  3. Under Global Audio Devices → Mic/Auxiliary Audio, select Microphone (WO Mic Device).
  4. Click Apply and restart OBS if prompted.

2. Recommended OBS Audio Filter Chain for a Phone Microphone

In the OBS Audio Mixer dock, click the three dots next to Mic/Aux, choose Filters, and add these four built-in filters in exact top-to-bottom order:

Order & Filter Settings Purpose
1. Noise Suppression Method: RNNoise (good quality, more CPU) Removes constant room noise before compression
2. Noise Gate Close: −38 dB · Open: −32 dB · Hold: 150 ms Mutes the channel between sentences
3. Compressor Ratio: 4:1 · Threshold: −18 dB · Attack: 6 ms · Output Gain: +3 dB Evens out volume between whispers and loud reactions
4. Limiter Threshold: −3.0 dB · Release: 60 ms Prevents digital clipping on loud peaks

3. Compensating for Wireless Latency (Sync Offset)

If you also use a webcam in OBS, your lips may move slightly before the audio arrives:

  • USB connection: ~20 ms latency — no sync offset needed.
  • Wi-Fi connection: ~45–70 ms latency — if your webcam is faster than the audio, add a Render Delay filter (50 ms) to your Video Capture Device source so video and voice align.

For zero-dropout streaming sessions, we recommend connecting Android over USB with USB Debugging enabled and mounting the phone on a desk arm 15–20 cm from your mouth.
